The U.S. Mission in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Political Specialist in the Political Section.

Opening Date : March 01, 2019
Closing Date : March 15, 2019

Work Schedule : Full-time (40 hours/week)
SALARY : *Ordinarily Resident (OR) : CFA 17,430,003 p.a. (Starting Salary)
(Position Grade : FSN-10)

ALL ORDINARILY RESIDENT (OR) APPLICANTS (See Appendix for definition) MUST HAVE THE REQUIRED WORK AND/OR RESIDENCY PERMITS TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION.

BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION :

This is one of two Political Specialist positions located in the Political Office and directly reports to the American Political Officer. Incumbent conducts information gathering, research, analysis, and reporting in the field of political reporting. S/he attends meetings, translates, serves as note taker in English and in French, briefs Embassy officials to include the Ambassador on political developments, handles logistics, and organizes official events. Job holder is a Grant Officer Representative managing grants.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED :

1. EDUCATION : Bachelors’s degree in Political Science, International Relations, History, or International Law is required.

2. EXPERIENCE : Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in social science analysis and research, work with a geo-political or governance focused NGO, legislative assistant, chief of staff or assistant to a senior government or elected official, newspaper reporting of political matters, university teaching, is required.

3. LANGUAGE : Level IV (fluency) in writing/reading/speaking English is required.
Level IV (fluency) in writing/reading/speaking French is required. These may be tested.

4. SKILLS AND ABILITIES : Ability to interpret the needs of U.S. officials for analysis of current political developments. Ability to maintain contacts at all levels of the government and civil society. Ability to obtain material from varied sources and prepare reports/analysis in a precise, accurate and comprehensible manner. Ability to translate documents from French to English and vice-versa. Accurate and quick keyboarding skills, and knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). These may be tested.

5. JOB KNOWLEDGE : Excellent knowledge of Burkina Faso’s political institutions, structure, political parties and systems, and historical development. Good knowledge of international relations. Some knowledge about U.S. foreign policy and interests.
