The vacancy

In order to ensure accurate interpretation and translation from English to French, and vice versa for all business units as well as coaching staff in Burkina Faso in English proficiency, IRC is looking for a qualified interpreter/translator from Burkina Faso. The interpreter/translator will report directly to the Operation Manager in Burkina Faso.

Scope of work

The translator will be responsible for :

• Ensuring quality checks and proofreading of translations from English into French and vice-versa initially produced by the translation software provided by IRC or prepared by staff or by external translators ; ensuring that no typographical errors are left in the final text. Ensuring consistency of translation within documents and ensure efficiency. Content accuracy which includes a detailed comparison of content, facts, and figures and making sure there are no omissions from the source ; translations and proofreading all footnotes and/or endnotes, captions under photographs, lists, etc. ; accurate and consistent usage of IRC terminology adapted to French.

• Developing and maintaining a glossary of key technical terminology and guide for French-English and English-French translation (includes terms for water, sanitation, hygiene sector, finance, advocacy, policy, etc.).

• Ensuring excellent French and English language vocabulary, syntax, expression and grammar as well as all relevant terminology.

• Provide support to content and support teams with consecutive or simultaneous interpretation at meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars organised by IRC to approved standards from French to English and vice versa. Translator/Interpreter may be required to provide whispered or consecutive interpreting services as well as may occasionally be required to provide escort interpretation services in consecutive or whispered modes for dignitaries or experts.

• Coaching IRC staff English/French proficiency individually and in groups (face to face or virtually).

The translation submitted to IRC under this job description is the property of IRC and cannot be submitted, distributed to, or used by any other party unless arranged otherwise.

The translator/interpreter is obligated to work within the required deadlines and be available for comments and corrections.

Competencies

• Ability to work to deadlines and manage multiple tasks/projects according to priorities

• General knowledge of IRC and its work

• General knowledge of the WASH sector

• Excellent linguistic skills in English and French

• Strong editorial skills in English and French

• Ability to access reference materials available on-site needed to carry out their interpretation duties

• Skillful use of specialised terminology for water, sanitation, hygiene, experience with research and technical writing.

• Ability to handle working documents during the meeting while working in “Sight translation” mode

• Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships

• Ability to establish priorities, plan, coordinate and monitor own work.
Skills and experience

• Excellent proficiency in French and in English.

• BA Degree in English language and literature and/or Court Interpreter Certificate for English language.

• Proven hands-on extensive experience ; background knowledge and experience in translating development work is highly preferable ; prior experience in translating for international NGOs is an advantage.

• Proven experience in providing accurate, high quality interpretation services under pressure.

• Experience in using Word processing and other computer applications.
Other details of the position

This position will initially be offered as a one-year contract for full time work (40 hours per week). The contract will be based on an IRC employment contract in Burkina Faso. The contract can be renewed depending on the performance of the employee and availability of funds in IRC.

The position is in line with IRC’s project officer level in the employment policy and salary scale. The exact remuneration rate will be determined in accordance with the experience and qualifications of the applicant.

Start date from 1 April 2022 or as soon as possible.
